Emergency Preparedness

Ensuring the safety and welfare of the students entrusted to our care is of theutmost concern in the White River School District. In our ever changing world, itisessentialthat we be prepared for a variety of emergency scenarios.

One of the most important aspects of emergency preparedness is having plans andprocedures which are specific to each school site. Each school in the White RiverSchool District has such a procedure. Each plan is updated annually and includesa Command Team, a definition of Command Team roles, a list of those certified in First Aid/CPR,emergency telephone lists, evacuation routes, telephone numbers of utility vendors, and locations of utility shut-offs. Also included are the procedures to followfor such events as lockdowns and bomb threats. Two district-wide lockdown drills are scheduledeach school year. Also, our schools practice both earthquake and fire drills.

Another key component of emergency preparedness is that of supplies. Each school has been provided with emergency food, water, first aid supplies, and a wide variety of materials including but not limited to, pry bars, flashlights, dust masks, axes, candles, space blankets, hand crank AM/FM radios, name tags, hard hats, bull horns and glow sticks.

Communication is another critical factor in the event of an emergency where powerand telephone service is lost. The district has addressed this problem by installingemergency radios at each site. These radios are connected to deep cell batterieswhich are kept fully charged and therefore are able to be used if telephone services are down. Also, in the event of an evacuation, the radios are portable, can be quicklydetached, taken outside, and operated from an automobile. Our emergency radios are checkedonce a month to make sure they are fully operational.

Unfortunately, both natural and man-made disasters are a fact of life. White River School District believes that the key to effectively dealing with such events is to anticipate problems which may occur during such emergencies and put into place the necessary interventions to minimize damage to students, staff, and property.
