Student Privacy

The White River School District values the privacy of our students and the security of student information.
District use of software and websites is guided by three laws.

COPPA restricts software companies from collecting information about students under 13. This is why children under 13 are not allowed to make their own accounts. The White River School District does not use software or websites which require student accounts that do not meet this standard. The district reviews the use and privacy agreements of software before approving the use of software with our students.

FERPA requires that schools have written permission from the parent or guardian in order to release any information from a student's education record. This means that a school district should not share personally identifiable Information with application software companies and websites without parent permission. There are some exceptions. The district reviews the use and privacy agreements of software before and does not use the software unless the software meets FERPA requirements.
CIPA requires districts to filter Internet content to protect students. All district computer systems are connected to a filtering system. The filter settings are controlled by grade levels, i.e. high school students have broader access to internet locations than elementary students.
